Obituary for Shirley Codrington

On Monday, August 12, 2019, Shirley “Mama” Codrington, a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Great Aunt, Great-Great Aunt, and Friend, passed away at the age of 90.

Shirley was born on March 16, 1929, in Long Island City, NY to Robert and Dorothy Washington. Shirley was the youngest sibling of Robert and Jaqueline. She grew up in The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and attended boarding school in Bordentown, NJ. After graduating High School, she married Ornal V. Codrington in 1947. From that union, three children were born, Stephen, Bruce, and Leslie. For 41 years, she resided in Westbury, NY where she was a member of an art group where her gift of painting flourished. Westbury was also where she honed her bridge-playing skills. She was employed for 15 years at Bonded Packaging Corporation in Westbury as an Office Manager. After leaving Bonded, she continued working at Levitz Furniture, where she received many awards.

In 2002, Shirley relocated to Alpharetta, GA where she quickly joined the senior center and continued playing bridge. Although bridge was her favorite, she also enjoyed Yahtzee, Scrabble, and Monopoly, which she always won! Her favorite daily game shows to watch were Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud, especially with Steve Harvey as the Host. Aside from game shows, you could always hear Law and Order SVU playing while on the phone with her or approaching her door for a visit. She had a personal library at home full of books of her favorite author, James Patterson. She was also very proficient at crossword puzzles and worked on them daily. Her home was always full of treats such as Reese’s peanut butter cups, Ritz crackers with peanut butter and jelly in the center, diet coke, and chips. Her favorite dessert was strawberry shortcake, which she found difficult to find in GA. One of her favorite moments in GA was flying with her grandson, Kaylan who was piloting the airplane. She truly missed New York City, and more importantly, the beaches of Long Island. Her dream was to have a beachfront home with a porch and to have a loft in SOHO.

In closing, Shirley was a lover of life, and everyone she came in contact with loved her. Even in Shirley’s struggles, she did not complain. She met adversary with strength and courage. Although we miss her, we know she is free.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, and son. She is survived by her son, daughter, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, and host of special close friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association will be appreciated.
